Peggy
Cyphers - ANIMAL SPIRITS - June 2009 ANIMAL SPIRITS, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Peggy
Cyphers. The paintings of Peggy Cyphers evolve out of her interest in the earliest theories of Evolution. Her work is
abstractions of characters and landscapes in vibrating dialogues which operate on the emotions and calm sensory perceptions.
The process suggests an automatic writing, a stream of consciousness between geological, primordial and cultural time. NEA Award winning artist, writer, curator,
and Pratt faculty member, Cyphers has had more than 25 individual exhibitions of her paintings. Her most recent solo
show was her Field/City series of paintings at The Proposition Gallery in Chelsea. Her work is included in many public, private and corporate art collections including
the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Smithsonian Institution, Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection, and Weatherspoon
Art Museum. "She's
. . . painting in an effortless style that corrupts and complicates the staining technique originated by Color Field painters
like Helen Frankenthaler with various ideas in the air: notational, pattern-prone motifs, landscape references and allusions
to textiles and fabric." Roberta Smith, New York Times "One mark of artistic vision is the ability to create a pictorial world
in which everything looks distinctive and nothing appears contrived. This is a mark difficult to obtain but it has been
hit, right on target . . . Cyphers seeks that critical edge where form emerges with feeling, space suggest situation,
and image turns into idea." Ronny Cohen, Artforum |
